Overview

100% collects all menu items at their max upgrade and all heart containers. The way upgrades work in this game (higher upgrade replaces the old one in the menu), only the highest level upgrade is needed, this allows players to skip the Red Shield, Blue Mail, and Blue Boomerang.

  • You are not required to get the upgrades for Bombs and Arrows. To do so would require tedious rupee grinding and a lot of time at the wishing well.
  • You do not have to finish with at least 1 bomb (or arrow) in your inventory. They do disappear from the menu, but bombs/arrows are required to complete the game anyway.

Rupee Route

The basic Rupee Route pulled from the above section is this:

  • 100 Rupees from Sahasrahla
  • At least 10 Rupees from enemy drops or backup pots in Light World
  • 300 Rupees from Hype Cave (in the Dark World 1 screen south of the Bomb Shop, the cave behind the cracked wall in the NE section of the screen - Talk to the NPC)
  • 300 Rupees from C-House
  • Plus miscellaneous insignificant rupee amounts you get in a few spots for free (ie. Blind's Hideout HP, where 15 rupees are in your path going to the HP Chest)

That adds up ~710 rupees, which actually isn't nearly enough to buy everything we need:

  • 110 rupees for Kiki to open Palace of Darkness
  • 80 rupees to play the Digging Game
  • 100 rupees to buy the Merchant Bottle
  • 30 rupees to play the Chest Game
  • 10 rupees to buy the Tempered Sword
  • 500 rupees to buy the Flippers
  • 100 rupees to buy the Super Bomb

Those costs add up to 930 rupees. So where is the deficit made up? The route assumes you will make most or all of it up while playing the Digging and Chest Games, which is a pretty safe assumption generally. But since those sources are reliant on luck, it's important to know backups for when things go awry.

Prevention

One of the best ways to stop from getting in trouble is to give yourself some breathing room. This is primarily done from the 3 red rupee chests in the Kakariko Well, which can be quickly collected while you're in there getting the Heart Piece. If you're here with less than 300 rupees, it's generally a good idea to get however many of these you need to get to 300+ (or if less than 240, get them all of course). This will give you some wiggle room to have poor rupee luck at Chest Game and still be able in a good spot to buy everything later.

Flippers

The next spot to check your count is after playing Chest Game. The immediate cause for concern is if your count is less than 210 rupees after getting the Heart Piece. This means that after C-House, you'll have fewer than 510 rupees, which isn't enough to afford the Flippers (keep in mind, 10 rupees go to the dwarves to Temper your sword).

Here are the important backups if your count is this low:

  • Kakariko Town Tree: The tree west of Blind's Hideout has 20 rupees if you bonk into it. Do this when you flute back to Town after getting the Purple Chest Bottle.
  • Pyramid Statue Pull: The leftmost statue in front of the Pyramid can be pulled for 20 rupees. Do this after using the Castle Gate Warp when on your way to Catfish for the Quake Medallion.

Notes I have never seen or done a run where the 40 rupees above wouldn't have been enough to cover the Flippers cost IF the player also avoided dangerous counts leaving Kakariko Well. Once again, that prevention is extremely important for avoiding disaster scenarios. Beyond those two spots, there's not much to do for guaranteeing rupees other than killing ropas and praying or going to some slow farm spot. Don't get yourself into that situation -- get the Kak Well money.

Super Bomb

So if you had less than 210 leaving Chest Game and had to take care of the Flippers issue above OR you have between 210-310 leaving Chest Game, there's another concern: you won't have enough to afford the Super Bomb. Fortunately this isn't a very precarious position to be in, as unlike the Flippers scenario, there are a ton of quick backups along the route to cover the cost.

The magic number you want to reach after buying the Flippers is 100 rupees. Get whatever combination of the listed backups that get you to that count. For real nerds, I also listed the approximate cost of each of these backups so you can also get the fastest ones that fit with the count you need:

  • 10 rupees after Sociable Firebar Dropdown: The pots to your left and right after falling both have 5 rupees under them. The one to your right is the fastest backup pot in the route (only costs 10 frames). The second one will cost an additional 30 frames.
  • 5 rupees in Swamp Statue Room: The pot you hookshot to on the left side of the room -- it has 5 rupees under it! Costs ~20 frames to grab.
  • 25 rupees in Swamp Big Key Room: Hammerdash through the row of pots next to the Big Key. Each pot has 5 rupees under it, and you can dash through them on your way out of the room after collecting the Big Key. This only costs ~1 second for 25 rupees, so it's an important backup.
  • Mire Shed red rupee: The chest to the right of the Heart Piece chest has a red rupee in it. This costs ~2 seconds to collect.
  • Swamp Waterfall red rupee: The chest in the Waterfall Room (push the 3rd block from the left to reveal it) has 20 rupees. This costs ~2.5 seconds to collect.
  • 80 Rupees have been listed so far, and the final 20 depends on the situation:
    • If you had enough to cover Flippers leaving Chest Game, the next best 20 rupees is Kakariko Town Tree after collecting the Purple Chest Bottle. Bonk the tree on your way to Skull Woods. This rupee costs ~3 seconds.
    • If you didn't have enough for Flippers, then you likely got the Kakariko Town Tree to cover that cost, and it's therefore not an option for you for getting the Super Bomb. In this event, after completing Swamp Palace, pull the statue one screen east of Swamp Palace while on your way to Lake Hylia Heart Piece. These rupees cost ~5 seconds.
